What is CERN?

CERN is European Organization for Nuclear Research. It is the world's largest particle physics laboratory, situated in the northwest suburbs of Geneva on the Franco-Swiss border (46°14′3″N 6°3′19″E / 46.23417°N 6.05528°E / 46.23417; 6.05528). The 12 founding member states of CERN in 29 of September 1954.
Today the organization has twenty European member states, and is currently the workplace of approximately 2,600 full-time employees, as well as some 8,000 scientists and engineers (representing 580 universities and research facilities and 80 nationalities).
Bulgaria became a member in 1999.
Co-operation between Bulgaria and CERN started in the 1980s with the participation of Bulgarian physicists in the L3 experiment at LEP.
Bulgarian scientists, engineers and technicians are involved in different experiments at CERN, though the main efforts are concentrated on CMS. Bulgarian specialists are also very active in the LHC Computing Grid LCG, in EGEE, and SEEGRID. Bulgaria’s membership in CERN provides important new perspectives for the professional development of a young generation of physicists and IT specialists.
